(WNBK) #4: "Of the Coming of John"

Meditate on the ironies of the fact that TKAM was set in Monroeville.

  1. Such similar situations occur in both stories! Ah, Monroeville...it seems to be a place where family comes first and, of course, racism is a primary, serious issue. How hateful are some of the heart's of Monreoville's citizens, prejudice filled to their brims. It settles in their lineage and impoverished minds like seasonings upon rotten meat. They convicted Tom and Walter by lies and contempt. How unfortunate people like the Ewells could live in this world, and cause so much pain and hate towards the innocent, destroying the beauty of humanity and life. Yes, discrimination flows there, like bad sewage in their city water, and trickles into multiple cases in Just Mercy. This is so we better understand the harshness of racial discrimination, and how we must learn to love.

It is indeed quite ironic how TKAM's setting is Monroeville. The entire story of Tom's trial relates to exact case that Walter is currently stuck in. The wrongful conviction and incarceration of African Americans, the lies made to convict these men, and the injustice and unfairness of the trial. I have to agree with Gigi that the discrimination and segregation found within both of these men's stories are similar and are filled with in the inhuman and improper treatment of human beings.

  2. Ahhh the connections. These stories have so many similarities it blows my mind. The fact that racial segregation plays a big part in these stories shows that no matter where you are injustice is a big problem. Walter and Tom are both wrongly convicted for crimes they didn’t commit number one, and number two for crimes that had no evidence that led police to believe they did it. People in both stories were also so quick to believe that both men committed the crime they were accused of just based off of their race. Another connection between the two stories would be Mayella and Myers. Both of them falsely accused Tom and Walter of committing these crimes. One little detail I noticed is that both Sheriffs were named Tate at well. There were so many connections between these two books other then the fact that Just Mercy even mentions TKAM.

All of the above so true!! There are so many connections between To Kill a Mockingbird and Just Mercy, Monroeville being one of them. Monroeville is a prime place for racial injustice. Both Walter and Tom were wrongly accused for crimes they didn’t commit. Race played a big role in both situations. I also agree with Savannah’s connection between Mayella and Meyers.
