(WNBK) #6: "The Stonecatchers' Song of Sorrow"

What is a “stonecatcher”?  What does it take to be one?  How important are they?

Comments

  1. Metaphorically speaking a “stone catcher” is a person who catches stones people cast at each other. In the real world, the stones represent pain and hate, and the stone catchers represent people that help the hurt and grieving. To be a stone catcher one must put aside their personal feelings to help another, and be a good listener. Without stone catchers, our world would be a darker place, and many people would grow sad as well as have unresolved trouble

You are right on with the metaphorical stance of "stonecatcher". I do believe that stonecatchers are the ones that take the fall for the suffering, and give all ears, open hearts, and a lifting hand to those who are in need of comfort and relief. Stonecatchers must have a strong sense of empathy, trust, and listening skills to help bear the others' pains of loss. I'd say that stonecatchers are as valuable as a therapist. They are healers, working together under such sweet, subtle, anonymity to scraping away as much pain from this world as they can. I think of a two person, meaningful, personal support group.

    1. I agree with you Gigi on the characteristics it takes to be a stone catcher. A stone catcher is someone who defends and sticks up for people, especially people who can’t take care of themselves or are too weak. They protect others against backlash and hate and are advocates for the victim. A stone catcher may be a friend to you, but to somebody else they are a superhero.

To be a stone catcher you need strength, kindness, sympathy, and trustworthiness. A stone catcher is sympathetic to understand, trustworthy to listen, and humble. It takes a special person to be a stone catcher; someone who is emotionally strong. A stone catcher is someone who can carry the burden of the stones being casted. They also can’t be judgemental. They have to leave all of their opinions at the door and focus on the “stones,” the victim, and their own inner strength.

Stone catchers are very important to us humans and the world. Without stone catchers our world would be completely filled with hate. If everyone in the world was a stone catcher there would be no more stones left to catch.

A stone catcher is someone who is willing to catch "stones" being thrown by the merciless and filled with the intent of hurting others. Stones resemble anger, hate, discrimination, and injustice found throughout the world. Stone catchers are there to catch those stones before they inflict damage that is life lasting. These Stone catchers are helpful to the rest of society, they're protecting and care about letting those hurt be healed instead of being damaged day after day.

I agree with all of the comments before me, and I also think that the importance and characteristics of a stone catcher directly relate to this book. I even did some research and there are articles of other people talking about chapter 16 and how stone catchers are such a big role in it as well as a part of the overall theme. I think Bryan Stevenson is a stone catcher and ultimately in his writing, throughout Just Mercy, he’s asking us to be one too.
